Uninor Introduces ‘Dynamic Pricing’ 24X7 Changing Discount Plan

Uninor Introduces ‘Dynamic Pricing’ 24X7 Changing Discount PlanUninor today announced the launch of new concept called ‘dynamic pricing’ that is likely to set a new trend in the pricing of mobile services in India.
This is first of its kind service in India dynamic pricing is  ‘24X7 Changing Discount Plan (DP)’, will offer customers changing discounts on their calls based on traffic on the network and our sources indicate Aircel will soon announce a similar service.
The discounts will change with location and with time, with each cellphone tower broadcasting a different discount. At the same location, the discount will change on an hourly basis. By puttingcustomers in control of costs, with 24X7 changing discount rates, this could very well change the tariff structure in Indian telecom.
Under the ‘24X7 Changing Discount Plan (DP)’, customers will be able to avail a discount on their calls that ranges from 5% to as much as 60%, depending on their location and time at which they call. This discount will be applicable on a standard base call rate of 50 paisa per minute for any local call, Uninor-to-Uninor or Uninor-to-any other operator. This means a 1-minute call could cost as low as 20 paisa and never more than 50 paisa.

How does it work
The discount available at any given time will be visible at all times on the screens of handsets that display cell broadcast. The discount visible on the screen at the time a customer calls will be the applicable discount for the call. When the call ends, a flash will appear on the phone screen indicating the actual discounted cost of the call.
The dynamic discounts available at any given time will depend on network traffic andcustomers location at that time, providing customers maximum flexibility to choose between convenience and savings.
“The 24X7 Changing Discount Plan (DP) will not only help customers make significant savings on their bills, but also empower them by placing the power of tariffs in their hands. We will pass on our network capacity savings to our customers. With customers using our service more at locations and times that give best discounts, we will also be able to utilize our capacity better.  It is a perfect model and I won’t be surprised if it soon becomes an industrypractice.” said Ann Hofvander, Executive Vice-President, Karnataka Hub.
Sophisticated technology that puts the customer in control
Discounts are calculated by a sophisticated ‘Discount Engine’ that relies on state-of-the-art IT systems to continuously monitor traffic at every tower in the network. For customers, this could literally mean discounts changing from, say 5% to 60%, just by crossing a street, ascustomers move into the coverage of another tower. Over a longer period, this would mean considerable savings on phone bills.
Ann Hofvander Executive Vice President Bangalore Hub quoted In a market as dynamic and price competitive as Karnataka, differentiation will be the key to success. We will do this by listening closely to our customers’ wishes and living our values of simplicity, respect, keeping promises and being inspiring. As we continue to deliver the services to our customers in Karnataka, this launch at Tumkur fortifies our commitment and focus to reach out to every town and village of the state. Our intent is long-term – to build Uninor as the preferred servicein India”.

Acer to launch full line of mobile Internet devices in May

Acer plans to launch a full line of mobile Internet devices (MIDs) by the end of May in a bid to boost profitability and add to its mobile device offerings.
The company will also release version 4.0 of its Shell user interface on the new MIDs, said Gianfranco Lanci, Acer's CEO and president, at the company's first-quarter investors' conference. The devices will all include 3G wireless connectivity and will be able to interact together and share data, he added.
Acer executives declined to further discuss what kind of devices it would reveal. But the devices will clearly include a range of screen sizes, from tablet-sized devices to smaller gadgets with 7-inch screens or so. Pictures on the company's presentation materials indicated the range of devices, and Acer executives said they planned to put out a variety of devices with varying hardware configurations, not just Intel and Windows.

The company believes such new devices could be bigger profit drivers because people are intrigued by mobile devices these days.
Acer depends on mobile devices for its livelihood. Mobile computers such as laptops and netbooks accounted for 69 percent of its revenue in the first quarter. Netbooks, which Acer leads in, will continue to grow at a rate of nearly 50 percent this year, executives said.
"The netbook is still growing faster than the notebook," said Lanci. "I think growth with stabilize at 45 percent to 50 percent growth for the next two or three years."
Acer's revenue in the first quarter rose 36 percent year-on-year to NT$162.1 billion (US$5.2 billion). Net profit increased 63 percent to NT$3.29 billion. The results would have been better but the company faced bottlenecks in some shipments of components, Acer executives said. Acer was able to get all the components it needed, but the shipments came in later than hoped for sometimes.
Acer executives also said they do not expect to pay Android-related licensing fees toMicrosoft. Microsoft has said it licensed some patents to mobile phone maker HTC for use on the company's Android-based smartphones, and the software giant is in talks with several other vendors over its patent concerns.
Acer is not in talks with Microsoft over Android-related patents, said Lanci. He said Acer is Microsoft's second-biggest customer, putting Acer in a better negotiating position on licensing-related matters than smaller companies such as HTC. Acer will ship 40 million or 50 million copies of Windows on its desktops and laptops, according to Lanci.
Acer uses Google's Android mobile OS on smartphones and at least one netbook that allows users to boot up either Android or Windows.
The company plans to redouble its efforts in China, and acknowledged having learned lessons in the market. The company plans to boost marketing spending in the nation and increase consumer research to make sure it's putting the right components on devices there. Chinese users prefer larger screens and always look for independent graphics chips, said J.T. Wang, chairman of Acer.
"I think this time we have the right approach," he said. The company has set a goal of US$1.5 billion in revenue in China this year.
Most of Acer's revenue comes from Europe, which accounts for 50 percent, with 27 percent from the U.S., while the Asia-Pacific region made up the majority of the rest, including 5 percent in China and Taiwan. Acer hopes to boost the China figure to around 8 percent.

Buy a smart Nokia, download unlimited music for a year

Nokia

NEW DELHI: Nokia has joined the battle with telecom service providers for a share of the online music pie. Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, on Thursday said its customers in India will be able to download unlimited music on their handsets or personal computers.

The catch is that only those customers who buy a smartphone where this facility is enabled will get 12 months of unlimited free music downloads.

“The 5-series and X-series of handsets will offer 12 months of unlimited music downloads,” Nokia’s Vice President & Managing Director for India D Shivakumar said. The price range of these handsets range from Rs 6,000—Rs 18,000, he added.

But, existing customers of Nokia who already use handsets from these series cannot avail this facility. “You have to buy a new mobile phone to get unlimited music downloads,” Mr Shivkumar said. He added that going forward, Nokia would make this service available on other handset series too.

Nokia customers can download music from the Ovi Music Unlimited service that has been launched in India today. Nokia executives also said the company was yet to take a call if this service would be charged after the 12-month period expires.

Analysts say the handset maker will find it tough to come up with a business model to charge customers for music after the 12-month period, especially in a market which is used to the concept of receiving and exchanging pirated music for free. Nokia will also have to compete with telecom service providers such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Reliance Communications, who offer music downloads to their customers for rates as low as Rs 2–5 per track. However, industry executives say most music on mobile phones in India is consumed through data cards where customers download, store and exchange tracks for free.

The Ovi Music Unlimited service has four million tracks and off these, one million numbers are Indian music, Mr Shivakumar explained. Our nearest competitor in India offers about 100,000 tracks, he added.

Nokia has tied up global music labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music for the service. It has also partnered with Indian Music Industry (IMI) to offer a consortium of more than 150 domestic music labels like Hungama, Yash Raj, Tseries, Eros and SIMCA (South Indian Music Companies Association). The firm said it had done an in-depth research with Indian consumers on how they would like to consume music on their mobile phones and used the findings to create a ‘Made for India’ music service proposition.
