The Pirate Bay Founders Sentenced To Jail And $6.5 Million Fine

The founders of the popular torrent site The Pirate Bay – Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundström have had their previous convictions upheld by a Swedish court of appeals. The three defendants did see their prison sentences reduced but the court increased the fine levied on the trio from 30 million kronor to 46 million kronor (USD $6.5 million). In April of 2009, a 1 year jail sentence was handed down to the three defendants; the new sentencing has the Swedish residents spending between 4 and 10 months behind bars: Neij, 10 months in prison; Sunde, 8 months in prison; Lundström, 4 months in prison.

The chairman for the Swedish arm of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Ludvig Werner said “In two years, this type of piracy will be over. After a ruling like this and all the pioneers start to get older and have children and families, piracy won’t occur to this extent.” Christian Engström, a Pirate Party member of the European Parliament, refutes that claim, “The judgement has no meaning for file sharing. It has continued to increase from year to year and the technical capabilities continue to develop.”

here is currently no word if this ruling will have any impact on the The Pirate Bay website. What do you think of the whole argument though? Do you think that piracy will slow down due to court rulings like these? Let us know in the comments below!
No word on what impact, if any, this ruling will have on The Pirate Bay website.

Playstation Phone Details Leak

More details about the Playstation Phone from Sony Ericsson have leaked. The details were leaked to Mobile Crunch who heard that the Playstation Phone was very real.A few other details mentioned about the device include the screen being on par with the iPhone 4 retina display perhaps with some BRAVIA technology being pushed in there by Sony. We also hear that the device is nowhere near ready and that it might be ready for February to be launched at Mobile World Congress.
Other information reveals that the price tag will be somewhere around the $500 mark (unsubsidized). This price tag will see the device have around 5 games that come with the unit. Other games are expected to be sub $10 perhaps pushed through the Android Market.
Z-System has been confirmed as being real and perhaps could be the way games are distributed although that depends on games being pushed through the Android Market. It isn't full clear what this part of the system will do.
Apparently the Mobile Crunch tipster was impressed and said that it's the best gaming on a mobile device he has seen.
Certainly interesting stuff!

Mobile Number Portability in India – A Reality Now!

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India, which has been delayed for more than two years now, has finally made its debut starting in the Haryana circle. Mobile Number Portability allows unhappy customers to switch to another mobile service provider within the same circle, while retaining their existing mobile telephone number. Mobile Number Portability service is expected to be launched in other circles also by the end of this year itself.
It is estimated that, 10 percent of the mobile subscriber base is expected to avail MNP service in the first year. MNP implementation is expected to improve the competition and the quality of service as well.
Mobile Number Portability will also play a significant role in the 3G space as not all the operators have spectrum. So, a subscriber of a mobile operator which does not have 3G services may look to move to an operator who has.
The maximum time period for porting would be seven working days except in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licenced service areas, wherein it would be 15 working days.

Steps to Change Mobile Service Provider (MNP FAQ)

Now that Mobile Number Portability is a reality in India, let us go through the steps to be followed for switching from one mobile service provider to another.
What do I need to do for switching to another service provider?
For porting to a new service provider, you need to send an SMS PORT <Your 10-Digit Mobile Number>to 1900 from the mobile number you wish to be ported. You will receive an SMS with the Unique Porting Code (UPC) from your current service provider.
Now visit the nearest customer service station of the new service provider, apply in the prescribed application form quoting the Unique Porting Code (UPC).
The Unique Porting Code is the reference while filling up the application form with the new service provider.
You need to follow the steps for signing up as a new customer of the selected service provider. As per TRAI regulations, porting has to be completed within seven working days.
A maximum porting charge of Rs 19, as fixed by TRAI, can be charged by the new service provider.
Post-paid subscribers have to make sure that their last bill has been paid.
For pre-paid subscribers, any balance amount left will not be carried forward when the number is transferred to the new service provider.
Once a subscriber ports his number to the new operator, then, he will have to wait for at least 90 days before he can change his operator again.

Simplest Cellphone in the world

When handset manufacturers are vying to create most advanced and sophisticated handsets, there's a small company in dutch that is striving for the exact opposite. Yes, their mission is to create the world's simplest phone!

The amsterdam-based dutch advertising agency called John Doe has created a most basic cell phone under the brand John's Mobiles. The handset allows you to make and receive phone calls. That's it! No frills. No camera, no mp3, no video, no facebook and nothing else...

johnsphone_snow_home

The handset is a quad-band phone which allows it to work across the globe. The phone has a single ringtone with 3 levels of volume. Fortunately, the phone vibrates! They have gone to such extent that the phone does not even has an address-book. The address book is a paper and pen both of which are housed on the backside. The battery is good with a capacity of 1200mAH with a standby time of more than 3 weeks. The phone can be charged through adapter or through USB cable. Thankfully, the phone can house 10 speed-dial numbers. One set of earphones is provided to enable hands-free calling. Since the phone is manufactured with high-quality plastic it is resilient and water-resistant.

It's not without a reason this gadget is called 'anti-Phone'. The phone comes in 5 colour choices and will cost 59-67 pounds. This is targetted towards the older generation who wants to keep things simple and who are overwhelmed with today's technology!

"At a time when there is an abundance of choices and oppressive channels, we wanted to develop a simple gadget," the Sun quoted the phone's designer, Diedriekje Bok, as saying. Interesting viewpoint.
